Mary Walsh (played by the late Brittany Murphy) drops her boyfriend, Kevin Peterson (played by Dean Cain) off at the hospital where he is going to have orthopedic surgery. She parks the car then joins him in his room to see him off. When booted from the room so the nurse can prep the patient she is told it will be an hour so she goes downstairs and has breakfast. On finishing she goes back up to wait and after several hours finally approaches the desk where she learns there is no record of anybody checking in with that name and the doctor supposed to do the surgery is on vacation. The nurse who was to prep her, there is no such employee with that name.
She gets a detective involved who searches around and questions employees but is unable to find anyone who has seen him. After discovering she is on antidepressants they begin to think she is having a bout of nuttiness and force her talk to a psychologist who deems her crazy and places her under a involuntary 72 hour observation for mental illness. she has to try to prove she is not nuts and save her man after receiving a ransom demand
